Amarillo SPCA reaches shelter capacity

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Amarillo SPCA has reached capacity at their animal shelter. They are no longer able to accept medium and large dogs, as well as cats.

“I have 54 pins out there a every one of them has a dog in it,” Debra Hall Amarillo SPCA facility manager said. “On my small dog room, I have maybe a few pins open.”

Hall shared that since October they have experienced a significant increase in the amount of strays that are being reported and brought in or people surrendering their pets.

“We get phone calls on a daily basis that people find animals running out loose,” Hall said. “I had a little girl come in the other day she had a tub full of puppies and she said they had found them. We couldn’t take them in because we just don’t have the room and it makes us feel bad. Because we can’t take them in and we hate for them just put them back out and turn them loose or whatever.”

While at the shelter the animals are watched over by staff and receive necessary medical treatment they may need.
