Amarillo seeks solutions for S. Grand St. after fatal crash prompts citizens’ outcry

With questions being posed by community members about the state of South Grand Street, following the Jan. 11 two-car accident that claimed the lives of three people just south of the Comanche Trail Golf Course, the city is hoping to work with Randall County to be able to improve the road.

Mayor Cole Stanley spoke about how prioritization of street repairs is done in the city and how this area of Grand is unusual in responsibility for the city and county. According to the city, the areas of Grand are only parties in the city limits.

“Grand is a road owned in a peculiar way between us and the county, so there is no clear delineation as to where that stops and starts,” Stanley said. “I am confident that the judge and the county will want to work with us, once we rightly define who owns what portions of that road. I believe that road was already itemized to be worked on in 2017 and got pushed back.”

This discrepancy and disagreement between the city and county leaves in question what entity pays for what and what agreements can be made for cost sharing.
