Now and Then: Shaun Massie and Hutton Sharp embracing new friendly rivalry

Jerod Mayo spent his entire professional playing career learning under Bill Belichick, retired to become an assistant under Belichick, and was recently hired to take over from Belichick.

Mike Vrabel played under Belichick, began his coaching career as an assistant with Houston, and eventually became a head coach for the Tennessee Titans, going head-to-head with Belichick.

But how many players can say they played under a head coach, served under a head coach, AND coached against that same coach? In the NFL, that would take some research. But in the Texas Panhandle, it’s happened before. This girls soccer season, it’s going to happen once again.

Hutton Sharp is in his third year as head coach of the Tascosa girls team. Growing up, he played under Shaun Massie for the club team Amarillo Drifters, beginning 21 years ago and continuing for five years.

Following a college career at Ottawa University, Sharp returned to Amarillo and served as an assistant under Massie with the Drifters for another three years. Massie also coached Sharp’s younger brother and two younger sisters. They’ve been around each other most of Sharp’s life.
