AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center will display “Cards and letters from Home” honoring Amarillo Navy Veteran Jackie Smith for Valentine’s Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Officials detailed Smith, ET-2, was assigned to the USS Tarawa in 1991 which was assigned duty in the Persian Gulf during the Persian Gulf War. According to officials, students in 1991 from Smith’s elementary schools, Oakdale, Landergin and Humphrey’s Highland sent Valentine’s Day cards and letters to Smith expressing respect, Valentine’s wishes and wishing Smith a safe return home.
Officials noted that these cards and letters will be on display at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center for visitors to enjoy.
Students from each of the schools in 1991 have been invited to tour the War Memorial education center and view the exhibits and any student who attended these elementary schools is welcomed by officials to view their work from 33 years ago.
Those looking to visit the Texas Panhandle War Memorial Center and Education Center can visit from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
