Winter storm could bring snow to Panhandle, South Plains Super Bowl weekend

As a winter storm descends upon the High Plains, residents are bracing for a weekend with colder temperatures and a chance for snowfall, though the National Weather Service office in Lubbock said a precise amount was still difficult to determine as the winter storm had begun to shift southward, adding an unpredictability to the impending weather conditions.

Anticipated accumulations ranged from light traces of flurries to several inches on the ground, all hinging on the storm’s location over the weekend.

As of Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service office in Lubbock indicated that the city is currently not expected to see snow accumulation over the weekend, although there is greater probability for the possible for the southernmost portion of the Panhandle around Plainview. The primary impact is anticipated in the Panhandle, particularly in Amarillo, where the NWS office has forecast a probability ranging from 40 to 70% for the accumulation of one inch or more of snow.

“In reality, snow will likely tend to focus on a more narrow area than the entire Panhandles, but there remains a good deal of uncertainty surrounding where exactly the best corridor of snow will be located,” a statement from NWS Amarillo reads.
