On Super Bowl Sunday, continuous snowfall for over 16 hours left more than one foot of snow accumulation in parts of the Panhandle-South Plains, as reported by the National Weather Service office in Lubbock.
The widespread snow event, followed by a chilly Monday morning where temperatures fell well below freezing, prompting area schools and offices to have delayed starts. Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper and Frenship ISDs were among districts that started late Monday, with Plainview ISD cancelling classes for the day Monday.
Although much of the snow had melted after a sunny Monday, overnight temperatures early Tuesday are expected to fall well below freezing again, creating potential for black ice and slick roadways.
Breaking the previous daily record for snowfall on Feb. 11, Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport received 3.6 inches of snow, surpassing the 2010 record of 2.1 inches. The Amarillo area saw between 2 and upwards of 6 inches of snow between late Saturday and Sunday, according to preliminary estimates from the Weather Service.
