City of Amarillo: Wastewater spill of 100,000 gallons contained at Cliffside Lift Station

An “unauthorized discharge of untreated wastewater” due to a mechanical pump issue was contained in a couple hours Tuesday at the lift station at 7100 Cliffside, the city of Amarillo said early Wednesday.

According to the city, the discharge occurred at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 2 and was contained by 2 p.m. that day. The city said the cause of the discharge was the failure of a mechanical pump bearing.

The discharge was 100,000 gallons, and the wastewater did not reach any natural waters or impact water supply, the city said in a news release: “Cleanup procedures are complete, including disinfection of the discharge by the addition of HTH to neutralize potential harmful constituents.”

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has been notified and is working with the city to minimize environmental impacts.
