River Road middle-schooler arrested following reported school shooting threat

A River Road Middle School student was taken into police custody Thursday following reports of threats made regarding a school shooting.

The Potter County Sheriff’s Office told local media the student was arrested and taken to the Youth Center of the High Plains.

“A River Road Middle School student was taken into custody this morning for alleged threats and an investigation is ongoing,” the district said in a statement Thursday. “RRISD is cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities and all students and campuses are proceeding without interruptions.”

River Road ISD spokesman King Hill said all students were safe on all campuses, and school is proceeding as usual. No weapons were involved in the incident, Hill said. The district said no additional information about the incident or individual would be released, citing Texas laws regarding privacy.

The Amarillo Police Department said Wednesday that reports of school threats earlier in the week at various Amarillo area schools were determined to be false, and that an increased police presence was seen at the schools in an abundance of caution for children’s safety.
