Amarillo airport unveils new display honoring astronaut Rick Husband

In a heartfelt tribute to a local hero, the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport unveiled a new display Monday dedicated to the late astronaut Rick Husband. The exhibit features a range of memorabilia that includes pictures signed specifically to Cavender’s, an STS-96 crew patch, and a signed letter of appreciation from Husband’s mother, Jane. These items provide a powerful reminder of his achievements and enduring connection to Amarillo.

Michael Conner, Director of Aviation at the airport, expressed his admiration for the new display. “It really warms my heart to see this tribute here,” Conner said. “We wanted to honor Rick Husband not only for his role as the commander of the ill-fated Columbia mission, but also for his remarkable life and connection to Amarillo. This display is strategically placed in a high-traffic area to ensure it reaches as many people as possible.”

The initiative to bring this tribute to the airport was spearheaded by Tex Roberts, a former Air Force member and postal worker. Roberts had discovered the framed memorabilia at Cavender’s Boot City, where it had been displayed in the store’s Hall of Fame. “I felt this collection deserved a more prominent location,” Roberts said. “Rick Husband is a cherished local hero, and it’s crucial for his legacy to be visible to everyone who passes through the airport.”
