Maverick Boys & Girls Club celebrates 90 years of serving Amarillo’s youth

The Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo recently marked a significant milestone — its 90th anniversary — celebrating a legacy that has shaped the lives of thousands of local children over nearly a century. The club, which began in 1934 as an athletics-focused organization, has evolved to become a vital resource for youth, providing mentorship, educational support, and a safe environment.

As part of its anniversary celebration, the club unveiled a new mural by local artist Osrin Rain, created in conjunction with the Hoodoo Music Festival. The vibrant mural honors the club’s rich heritage while looking forward to the future, symbolizing the resilience and independence of the youth it serves.

“We like to say we’re 90 years experienced, but we’re really looking forward to the next 90 years,” said Donna Soria, CEO of the Maverick Boys & Girls Club. “Right now, we serve up to 650 kids a day, and 90 percent of them come from low-income families facing challenges such as hunger, academic struggles, and the absence of a male role model.”
