Canyon City Commission denies smoke shop permit for second time

CANYON — The Canyon City Commission has once again denied a specific use permit application for a proposed vape shop at 400 23rd St. in Canyon, marking the second rejection of the business’s attempt to establish itself at the location.

The permit request, which would have allowed the smoke shop to operate under the city’s zoning regulations, was initially brought forward last year and was sent back to the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) for further review. Despite P&Z’s unanimous recommendation to approve the permit this time, the city commission voted against the application.

Prior to the commission meeting, letters were sent to 18 property owners within 200 feet of the site. Out of those, the city received only one response, which was in opposition. The lack of opposition at the P&Z meeting led the board to recommend approval, but the city commission’s decision ultimately hinged on broader concerns about the shop’s alignment with the city’s comprehensive plan and community values.
