Palo Duro Canyon set to host Chuck Wagon Roundup

CANYON, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Palo Duro Canyon is set to host the Chuck Wagon Roundup tomorrow. The event will happen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the canyon.

The funds raised at the Chuck Wagon Roundup will go to the Partners in Palo Duro Canyon Foundation. The foundation helps with the park’s needs. Officials said the foundation recently purchased new trailheads to keep visitors off trails and safe during temperature alerts in the summer.

The Chuck Wagon Roundup will celebrate the living heritage of Palo Duro Canyon.

“We can’t take Palo Duro Canyon for granted. It’s a natural landmark unlike anything else in the United States, and it’s right in our backyard. With it comes an incredible history that goes back 10,000 years to prehistoric.”

The event will have eleven chuck wagons preparing an authentic chicken fried steak lunch next to the Pioneer Amphitheater. Tickets are $25 each and will not be sold on-site.

“Chuck wagons started here back in the late 1800s. Charles Goodnight developed the chuck wagon. It’s the kitchen for the ranch. It fed the cowboys when they were out on the range. The folks who own [the chuck wagons] and work them, just love sharing the ranch history that goes with the chuck wagon. They’ll all be dressed kind of late 1800s/early 1900s in their outfits to add to it.”
