Canyon OKs incentives for new restaurant near iconic Tex Randall statue

CANYON – The Canyon Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has announced a new restaurant project at 1410 State Highway 60, aiming to transform a key gateway into downtown Canyon. The project, backed by local restaurant entrepreneurs, is designed to enhance the area’s appeal and boost economic growth.

“A lot of people know that 15th Street is a gateway to downtown,” said Stephanie Tucker, executive director of the Canyon Economic Development Corporation. “The city commission, as well as the EDC, wants to ensure that it’s welcoming to our visitors, especially with the presence of Tex Randall, and to make sure other properties, like those on Highway 60, invite people to explore downtown.”

The new restaurant is part of an ongoing effort to create a vibrant entrance into the heart of Canyon, and Tex Randall, a 47-foot-tall cowboy statue, plays a central role in this revitalization. Created in 1959 by sculptor Harry Wheeler, Tex Randall was originally built as a roadside attraction for the “Corral Drive-In.” Standing tall along U.S. Route 60, the statue has been restored multiple times, most recently in 2016, and is a celebrated piece of local history, symbolizing the spirit of the Texas Panhandle.
