Amarillo Fire Department takes extra steps to protect equipment, crew in cold weather

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – As cold weather challenges many people, the Amarillo Fire Department (AFD) must take extra steps to protect its personnel and equipment.

All AFD trucks are equipped with water on board in preparation for firefighting but traveling in cold temperatures can freeze the water, potentially damaging water lines and equipment.

“So the pumps are pretty safe but those exterior piping, all of that stuff, it is prone to freeze. We just have to kind of keep things running through it and do the best that we can and hope that we don’t break something. Although it does happen on occasion,” said Jason Love, community educator at the Amarillo Fire Department…
