City of Amarillo speaks about license plate readers

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The City of Amarillo is informing citizens on technical capabilities within law enforcement. According to City of Amarillo Mayor Cole Stanley, the city has two camera capabilities: license plate readers and the Fuses System.

“Those are cameras that typically will hit multiple angles around an intersection, but these are all public, forward-facing areas,” Mayor Stanley said. “So think of areas like 34th and Bell or I-40 and Coulter, places like that. There’s roughly 80 license plate readers that we have here in town, and there will be roughly 80 Fuses cameras. The other thing we have is all of our police officers wear body cams, and then we have cameras in other places. These are security cameras and they want to be treated like that.”

Mayor Stanley said the cameras are not surveillance technology.

“Amarillo is a town of 110 sq. miles,” he said. “We don’t have 80 cameras that are monitoring you or other citizens’ whereabouts or collecting any data on anyone. These cameras have a live feed. They go to storage, and they purge themselves every so often. So roughly 90 days that information gets taken out if it wasn’t anything that we needed in a specific event.”…
