Last week I wrote about the basics of pruning. This week I’ll add a bit more detail. The main reason that plants are rarely killed by incorrect pruning is that they are very resilient. For example, most pruning tasks are on plants that can regenerate themselves. We learned that most conifers cannot put out new growth where there are no leaves. For pines, junipers, etc. this is usually where they are shaded by growth as they mature. A notable exception are yews, Taxus x media “Densiformis” being a popular one here.
