‘At the mercy of TriWest’ | TRICARE switch leaves Texans without care access, clinics face closure

KILLEEN, Texas — On Jan. 1, health care delivery for TRICARE beneficiaries changed as part of the new regional contracts, which will affect roughly 1.1 million military families across six states, including Texas.

In Central Texas therapy clinics serving military families face imminent closure. “My son can’t be without care,” says Katie Ware, whose 2.5-year-old nonverbal autistic son risks losing his ABA therapy by month’s end. “It’s scary to think about him regressing. He’s made so many improvements.”

The crisis extends beyond specialized care. Military spouses with chronic conditions can’t access vital medications or scheduled surgeries…
