Mild & dry weather before stronger storm on Valentine’s Day

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Bitterly cold air has returned across the region, especially in northern areas with wind chills below zero degrees for many with air temperatures several degrees on either side of zero degrees for a few areas, while most areas to the south are starting of mostly below the freezing mark with little to no precipitation falling, but still some freezing mist is occurring from the East Highlands to the East Plains.

Temperatures will rise above freezing for most today with damp conditions only allowing afternoon temperatures to reach the 40s in Southeast New Mexico, but elsewhere will be milder, reaching into the 40s and 50s for most except for the Northern Mountains reaching the 30s, while parts of Southwest New Mexico will reach the low-to-mid 60s.

Conditions will dry out more later today with lighter but still somewhat persistent southwesterly winds for the western majority of the region warming things up, while easterly to southerly winds in the Pecos River Valley will keep things damp until the brief warm-up tomorrow as the next storm system starts to move into northern areas. Turbulent conditions in the form of a robust low pressure system will bring in more-widespread rain, including the Rio Grande Valley, and snow overnight in the Four Corners especially through Valentine’s Day tomorrow then into the first half of Saturday with fluctuating temperatures then following with gusty winds…
