AFD Marshal’s Office Urges Property Owners to Secure Vacant Structures

The Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office is urging property owners to secure vacant houses and commercial buildings.. In recent weeks, AFD has responded to multiple fires in vacant structures, many of which were unlawfully entered. These fires not only put lives at risk but also endanger neighboring properties and first responders. Under the 2021 International Fire Code Section 311, property owners are required to properly secure vacant structures against unauthorized entry to reduce fire hazards and other safety concerns. This includes ensuring all doors, windows, and other openings are locked or properly boarded up, and that properties are regularly inspected for signs of tampering.
