FIRST ALERT: Extreme winds Friday

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Unfortunately, it’s just that time of year again where the winds seem to dominate the forecast, and Friday looks to be the worst of it.

An approaching upper-level low pressure system looks to pass right over our northern portions of the area, bringing some very strong westerly winds through the daytime hours on Friday. Right now, sustained winds look to pick up to around 35-45 mph, with gusts upwards, or even over 70 mph.

Oddly enough, with this system passing closer to our area, there is a low-end chance for some scattered moisture in our northern counties near the center of the low pressure. But our main concerns will be the impacts from such stout winds. Obviously, we’re no strangers to the wildfire danger associated with these winds, but with a setup like this, low visibility and air quality due to blowing dust will be present, alongside wind related damages.

North/south travel on Friday will be susceptible to some rough crosswinds, so trucks, trailers, and other high-profile vehicles will face blow over risks. The good news is though, as we head into Friday night, a cold front arrives, leaving us with cooler and calmer conditions for Saturday.
