Gruver sweeps team titles at home track meet

While the Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions are taking center stage over the weekend, the Texas Panhandle saw plent of meets from across the Amarillo-area take place on Thursday and Friday.

The Gruver track teams were quite impressive Thursday during the Hounds Relays with both the Hounds and Lady Hounds claiming team titles. The Gruver boys team stacked up 195 points to defend the home track while the Lady Hounds racked up 168 points for a team championship.

Tyerin Aranda highlighted the girls’ side of action for Gruver earning four gold medals. The senior swept the hurdle events clocking a 16.14 in the 100-hurdle race and then won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.90. Aranda was also part of the Lady Hounds 800-meter relay winning team that posted a 1:50.37 and won the long jump championship leaping 17-0 1/2.

On the boys’ side, Gruver had a pair of individuals do big things Thursday. Senior Walker Maupin and freshman Mason Lankford combined for seven gold medals. Maupin won the 200-meter race clocking a 22.94, was a part of a winning mile relay squad that ran 3:37.93 and hit a 41-1 to win the triple jump. Lankford won the 110-meter hurdles thanks to a 15.36, then took gold as a part of the mile relay and won two field events in the long jump (20-8 1/4) and the high jump (5-10)…
