I have been following the story about the dock being installed out at Medi Park recently in Amarillo. So while I was enjoying a spring day in our great city, I decided to take a walk out at the park and check out the dock in person.
As I was driving out to the location, I noticed the new sign. I also remember the discussion late last year about honoring an Amarillo leader. They were discussing renaming something in his honor.
What is the New Name of Medi Park?
At that point it was either going to be Comanche Golf Course or Medi (Medical Center) Park. It turns out that Medi Park was the answer. Just recently the sign was put up at our park.
Here is more information on the renaming of the park from the City of Amarillo. I understand the idea of wanting to rename something in honor of someone in our community. I get it.
The problem is we have to find a different way to do such an honor. The problem is renaming something that has been known as something else for so long seems to defeat the purpose.
If you want to rename something, create something new and name it after the person. Renaming something else doesn’t seem to work so well. I know that I still call Southwest Park that. I know it’s called “John Stiff Park” but again it’s hard to change the name of something you grew up with.
Medi Park will be the same way. I will forever call it that. Even if you call it the new name, you will have to then explain so others know what you’re talking about. They will not know what John Ward Park is unless you throw in that it was called Medi Park…
