Amarillo, Texas is full of history. One of our most historical routes is Route 66 and millions of people over the years got their kicks on 66 here in the Yellow City.
The iconic route used to run on what is now Amarillo Blvd, and there are plenty of historic buildings and hotels on this route that were the hip place to be back in the day.
Route 66’s Ding How Restaurant in Amarillo, Texas
Ding How Restaurant was a hot place to stop when traveling on Mother Road. Originally built in 1957, the restaurant served up Chinese food to hungry travelers, and you knew when you saw the restaurant because of its iconic sign.
Just imagine driving down Route 66 and seeing this odd-shaped sign lit up with neon and lights screaming, “Come eat here.” You’d pull over and chow down.
The sign which has been dark since the restaurant closed in 1995 still stood tall welcoming travelers til recently.
What Happened to the Ding How Sign in Amarillo?
Looking at the building it is now boarded up and covered in graffiti and it is missing the sign.
In October 2023, the building still resembled its old self and the sign still stood tall reminding you of its long-gone beauty.
Sometime between then and February 2025, the building got worse, and the iconic sign finally gave up the ghost.
It looks as if remnants of the pole that held the sign lay on the ground.
Hopefully, the sign was removed to restore its former glory.
