Brandon Slay returns to visit Maverick Boys & Girls Club

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Brandon Slay, a former American freestyle wrestler and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist, is returning to Amarillo to visit the Maverick Boys & Girls Club as an alumnus.

According to Maverick officials, his former coach, Johnny Cobb, is also returning, and the return of Cobb and Slay is a reminder to youth that greatness can start in Amarillo. Officials stated Slay’s path to the Olympic gold was shaped by Cobb, who taught him the values of discipline, perseverance, and excellence.

Slay carried this mentorship by coaching Jordan Burroughs, a six-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist in wrestling.
