Recent storms swell Canadian River, prompting safety warnings for recreational visitors

POTTER COUNTY, Texas (KVII) — There’s more water flowing in the Canadian River thanks to recent storms at the beginning of the month and from rain throughout April. Law Enforcement agencies are encouraging anyone who comes to the Canadian River to recreate, whether you are going to go fishing, swimming, or cross the river in an off-road vehicle, to use extreme caution.

“What it was 10 months ago is completely changed due to the turnover of the water and those kinds of things,” said Brian Thomas, Potter County sheriff. “You just have to realize it’s not the same underwater there. What you thought was there isn’t there, or it could be a ten-foot hole, nobody knows.”

“Crossing the river where you thought it was really shallow could be really deep and put you and others in danger in your vehicle if you’re trying to cross the river there,” said Eric Smith, parks superintendent…
