City of Amarillo welcomes new council members, discusses affordable housing and project updates in Tuesday meetings

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo City Council is set to be sworn into office and have its first official meeting on Tuesday, where it will discuss items including possible contracts with Habitat for Humanity, municipal utility districts, local playa lake monitoring systems and drainage projects.

The city council special meeting is set to be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the City Hall Council Chamber, during which city officials elected during the May 3 municipal elections will be sworn into office. Those officials are set to include:

  • Amarillo Mayor Cole Stanley, serving a second term as mayor and a third term on the city council;
  • Tim Reid as Councilmember Place 1;
  • Don Tipps for his second term as Councilmember Place 2; and
  • Les Simpson for his second term as Councilmember Place 4.

Officials will also announce an order for a run-off election for Amarillo City Council Place 3, which will be held on June 7 to elect either incumbent Tom Scherlen or David Prescott to the position.

The city council meeting is expected to be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, with sign-up for public comment available online here, by calling the City Secretary’s office at 806-378-3014 or in person at least 15 minutes before the scheduled meeting start time.

Consent items listed in the agenda include considering rezoning ordinances, ground leases, city department equipment purchases, and contract considerations, such as those related to sewer projects and with Habitat for Humanity to provide funding for new affordable housing construction in the city…
