State reports 103 child drownings in 2024; including 3 Potter County cases

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — So far in 2025, 22 children have drowned in Texas, according to state officials, sparking renewed calls for water safety awareness as summer begins.

According to the Texas Department of Protective Family Services, drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of five, and most cases happen during the warmer months. The state is urging parents and caregivers to be extra cautious as water activities increase.

“Drowning can happen in seconds and in as little as an inch of water,” safety advocates said. “It only takes a moment of distraction.”…
