AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Water Development Board reported drought conditions across Texas improved for the seventh time in nine weeks, with nine consecutive weeks of drought coverage not expanding.
According to the TWDB’s most recent “Water Weekly” report, drought conditions impacted 39% of the state of Texas during the week of May 27, compared to 41% the previous week, 49% three months ago and 27% one year ago.

As noted in previous reports, the area of Texas impacted by drought recently reached its lowest value since October 2024. While drought has remained entrenched in parts of the state, areas in its northern half experienced at least one category of improvement in May.
In the Texas Panhandle, drought decreased slightly during the week of May 27. No areas of the region were impacted by “severe” drought conditions after improvements brought by rainfall, though the northernmost counties continued to experience some “abnormally dry” conditions.

Parts of Lipscomb and Hemphill counties also continued to contend with “moderate” drought levels.
During the last four weeks, the TWDB noted drought area in the state contracted from 53% on April 29 to 39% on May 27. Areas of the northern half of the state, including the northernmost counties in the Texas Panhandle, experienced at least one category of drought improvement. However, drought has continued in Central and West Texas.
