CANYON, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The City of Canyon has declared a local disaster following a severe hailstorm that swept through the area overnight, causing widespread damage to homes, vehicles, and infrastructure across the city. Officials said the storm is one of the most damaging weather events in recent memory, with assessments already pointing to tens of millions of dollars in destruction.
“We just issued a disaster declaration due to the hailstorm last night,” Mayor Gary Hinders said in a Sunday afternoon press briefing. “As an old-timer here in Canyon, I don’t recall a storm this comprehensive in terms of damage, from the west side of town to the east side.”
City leaders said no injuries have been reported, but there were several close calls.
