City of Amarillo talks pedestrian projects, North Heights bus stops, police chief search in Tuesday meeting

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo City Council is set to discuss pedestrian traffic safety improvements, grant awards for the Coming Home Project, bus stop improvements in the North Heights neighborhood and updates on the search for a new Amarillo Chief of Police, among other items during its Tuesday meeting.

The city council meeting is expected to be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, with sign-up for public comment available online here, by calling the City Secretary’s office at 806-378-3014 or in person at least 15 minutes before the scheduled meeting start time.

The agenda noted that discussion items will include the City Council receiving an update on the ongoing search for a new Amarillo Police Department Chief, after the retirement of former Chief Martin Birkenfeld in February. Since then, Assistant Chief Jimmy Johnson has served as Acting Chief of the Amarillo Police Department.

Consent items listed in the agenda are expected to include considering applying for Texas Department of Transportation Grants connected to multiple pedestrian improvements projects, accepting a Community Impact Grant for the Coming Home Project, an agreement for supplying the city with temporary staff, and a contract to improve bus stops in the North Heights neighborhood…
