Amarillo man sentenced to 50 years after plea to attempted capital murder of officer

An Amarillo man has been sentenced after pleading guilty on Tuesday to an attempted capital murder charge in connection to a 2023 shooting incident where an officer was injured.

Lyle Lavern Youngs pled guilty to two charges: attempted capital murder of a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance penalty group 1, in the 251st District Court of Randall County.

He was sentenced to 50 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the attempted capital murder charge. Due to the deadly weapon finding, he must serve at least 25 years before becoming eligible for parole, Amarillo police said.
