AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Amarillo College is stepping up to assist truck drivers in meeting a new federal law that mandates proficiency in English for communication with law enforcement. Previously, non-English speaking truckers could rely on translation apps, but the new requirement demands direct English communication.
Tony Diaz, the faculty coordinator for the truck driving program at Amarillo College, emphasized the importance of English proficiency for incoming students seeking to obtain their commercial driver’s license (CDL).
“You got to be able to tell me in English everything about the truck and do all the movements and so forth,” said Diaz. “So it’s pretty simple in that. So that’s all we’re gauging right now is what that comprehension level is and proficiency in that. And then they can be pretty much successful in this program.”…
