AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo Police Department asked community members for information on the death of Shamika Donise Scott in June 2000, which is now considered a cold case.
Police detailed that at around 11:50 a.m. on June 9, 2000, officers responded to a motel in the 3600 block of East Amarillo Boulevard. Officials confirmed that Scott was dead at the scene, after being found on the floor of a room “with obvious signs of trauma and blood.”

An autopsy confirmed Scott died as a result of smothering. Police noted signs of a struggle were seen in the room, as well as a still-hot curling iron on the floor, two burning candles and an open phone book on the bed indicating recent activity. Scott had rented the motel room, according to its registry, and a maid had received no response when attempting to clean the room earlier that morning.
The police department urged anyone with information on Scott’s death to come forward with any details that could help the continuing investigation. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Amarillo Police Department’s Cold Case Unit at 806-378-6468 or [email protected].
