Plea agreements filed for 3 men indicted on alleged cockfighting charges

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Three men previously indicted on charges related to alleged cockfighting recently filed plea agreements in Amarillo Federal Court, according to court documents.

Court documents said Salvador Sanchez Chavez, Ivan Herrera Lopez and Jaime Gamez Resendiz all filed separate plea agreements in June in Amarillo Federal Court:

  • Chavez filed a plea agreement for one count of alleged “attending an animal fighting venture,” which could include a fine of up to $100,000 and a prison sentence of up to one year if found guilty;
  • Lopez filed a plea agreement for one count of alleged “conspiracy to engage in an animal fighting venture,” which could include a fine of up to $250,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years if found guilty; and
  • Resendiz filed a plea agreement for one count of alleged “unlawful use of interstate instrumentality for promoting or furthering an animal fighting venture,” which could include a fine of up to $250,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years if found guilty.

All three men were previously indicted on charges related to alleged cockfighting in March, with the plea agreements filed on June 24. Court documents noted Chavez was rearraigned on July 2 and Lopez was rearraigned on July 7, while Resendiz had a rearraignment hearing scheduled for later in July.
