AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The first day of school will be here before you know it, and several groups around the panhandle are helping kids get ready to head back, and there are several back to school drives and outreaches happening before the first day to help get kids the supplies they need as they head back to the classroom.

Coming up on July 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Amarillo Civic Center, the Amarillo Police Department is hosting the Faith & Blue Back to School Outreach.
“We will have school supplies that the churches are giving away, we got public health coming out to do vaccines, we got Milan Institute doing a whole bunch of haircuts, we are going to have some games, dunk tank, just a good time,” said Officer Chris Claybrook.

This outreach is a part of the newly created Community Engagement Unit.
“The goal with that is for them to lead the rest of us and have events throughout the year where it is, either free or mostly free, and the community is invited and it’s a low stress for them and fun for us and we just, we get to engage with the community, get to meet people, get to know them and hopefully they are going to get a benefit out of that and so this is one of the events, we have done Picnic in the Park and we have done other things, but this is probably the biggest one so far and they will continue to do them periodically year round,” said Amarillo Police Department Sgt.
