City of Canyon encourages rabies awareness after recent cases

CANYON, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The City of Canyon and the Amarillo Public Health Department are reminding residents of Canyon to be aware of animals with rabies.

“Keep our wildlife wild, and keep away from strays,” said Carol Hill, Assistant Director ofAmarillo Public Health. “We want the public to be as safe as possible. If you see a wild animal,leave it alone and call your local animal control. If untreated, rabies is a fatal infection, soanyone who finds a bite or scratch should wash the wound immediately and seek medical care.”

City officials stated that Canyon has confirmed a case of rabies in a non-domestic animal, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Randall County this year to two. The City of Canyon and Amarillo Public Health officials are offering rabies awareness tips due to the cases, including:

  • Keep vaccinations current for all pets/animals, including horses and livestock.
  • Avoid contact with wild animals and unfamiliar animals.
  • Refrain from feeding wild animals, as it encourages their presence in the area.
  • Report all animal bites in Canyon city limits to the Canyon Police Department as soon aspossible; and
  • If bitten by an animal, wash the wound with soap and water and seek prompt medicalattention.

“It is important for residents to keep animal safety in mind, both for pets and wild animals,” saidCaptain Matthew Coggins, Canyon Police Department. “When people are outside enjoyingsummer activities, be sure not to touch any wild or unknown animals, and keep an eye on yourown pets. Ensure your gates and fences are secure so pets do not wander out, as well as keepingstray animals from wandering in.”
