Areal Flood Watch in effect tonight

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — An areal flood watch will be in effect until 7 a.m. cdt Thursday, July 31st 2025 for a portion of the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles along with eastern New Mexico. Heavy rain overnight could lead to localized flooding.

A notable summertime cold front has made it through most of the Texas panhandle as of this afternoon. This will likely allow for storms to key in on the I-40 corridor area where a swath of 1-to-3 inches of rain is going to be possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning. T-Storms are expected to stay primarily below severe limits but they will be prolific rain producers.

Rain rates of 1-to-3 inches per hour are going to be possible where storms develop and this could lead to a quick 2 inches of rain in some areas. Should this heavy rain fall on any urban locations, nuisance flooding will become a short-lived concern.

Sporadic rain showers have already developed this afternoon in New Mexico and additional development is expected through the overnight hours for locations along and north of the stalling cold front. The areas at highest risk for heavy rain will be near I-40 from Tucumcari east to Amarillo and then northeast towards Canadian, Texas and Beaver, Oklahoma.

Storms will be scattered so some areas will likely miss out on rain…
