The sidewalk came alive in chalk and color Saturday, July 26 as Amarillo College hosted its 17th annual “Chalk It Up,” drawing dozens of artists and spectators to its Washington Street campus for a celebration of public art and community creativity.
This year’s event brought 37 artists across 23 team entries to the Oeschger Family Mall, where each group transformed an 8-foot concrete square into a canvas. The result: a kaleidoscope of pop culture tributes, surrealist creatures, peaceful animals and personal expression — all temporary, but impossible to ignore.
“Chalk It Up is such a great chance for people in our community to get together and do something creative,” said Bruce Kim, communications coordinator at Amarillo College. “There’s a real spirit of fun and togetherness. Even folks who aren’t competing come out to vote and support the artists.”…
