Potter County Tax Office warns of recent text scam claiming unpaid taxes

POTTER COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Potter County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office issued an advisory to community members about a text scam attempting to convince people they have unpaid taxes that must be paid through a link in the message.

The office said it has received “numerous calls and inquiries from customers” in recent days about a text message being sent to Amarillo residents claiming they have unpaid taxes, then encouraging them to pay through a link provided in the text message.

The text message is not from the Potter County Tax Office, according to officials, and does not relate to any property tax accounts in Potter County.

“We want to encourage our taxpayers to be vigilant and to protect themselves against scams,” said Potter County Tax Assessor-Collector Thomas Warren. “The Potter County Tax Office will never contact you by text message to ask you to pay your taxes. Any correspondence originating from our office will be distributed solely through US mail.”

Anyone who has received the text was advised they do not need to take any action at this time. However, they are encouraged to delete the text and report it to their cellphone carrier as spam, if possible…
