75th anniversary of Carver School celebrated by alumni, community

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Carver School, located in Amarillo’s North Heights community, marked its 75th anniversary on Saturday with a special celebration attended by alumni and residents.

The event, held in the school’s auditorium, brought together former students, teachers, and community members who gathered to reflect on the school’s legacy and its continued importance in the area. Organized by Leo Bibles, pastor of New Zion Primitive Baptist Church, the celebration featured a mix of stories, memories, and discussions about the future of Carver School.

“We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of Carver,” Bibles said. “High school graduates and those who may not have graduated from Carver are coming back to remember the past, present, and future of Carver.”

Carver School first opened its doors in 1949, with just eight students in its inaugural senior class. Over the years, the school evolved, transitioning from a preschool through 12th-grade institution to a junior high school. In 1959, Carver moved to its current location, where it continued to serve the local community as an elementary school.

Bibles and other organizers stressed the importance of preserving the history of Carver, especially after integration led to many students being bused to other Amarillo schools. The celebration underscored the need to document the school’s legacy, much of which has been lost over the years…
