AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Monday evening’s rainfall left streets throughout the City of Amarillo flooded, causing a business to close early. COA officials said Playa Lakes displayed how effectively they are working across the city.
City of Amarillo Director of Public Works Alan Harder shared that Playa Lakes are the last stop for water within basins that contribute to it, and that on Monday night, some lakes’ water levels rose but still had plenty of capacity.

“There really was no correlation between any localized flooding in streets versus the playa lakes, because the playa lakes had a lot of capacity for water; they didn’t impact what was happening in the streets,” said Harder. “There’s always a flood. There’s always a rain event, I should say, where you’re just going to get enough water that it takes time to get into the storm sewer network and get away.”
