Man sentenced to 15 years for firing at police during hotel standoff in Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A man who fired at police officers during a tense standoff at a hotel was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The standoff happened October 10, 2022, when an employee at the La Quinta Inn reported seeing a man, later identified as 53-year-old Tony Nichols, who appeared upset and was armed.

Amarillo police responded to the scene and attempted to contact Nichols, who was in a hotel room with his girlfriend. She also called 911, reporting that Nichols had a weapon and was preventing her from leaving…
