AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – A man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for “Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant” for a 2022 incident with the Amarillo Police Department.
According to court documents, on Oct. 10, 2022, an employee at a local hotel called the police to report a man, 53-year-old Tony Nichols, who seemed upset and showed a gun. Documents stated she also reported that Nichols had a female with him.
Amarillo Police Department officers responded and tried to make contact. Documents state that Nichols was in a hotel room with his girlfriend, who also called 911 and reported that he had a weapon and would not let her leave. APD officers tried to negotiate with Nicholas, according to documents, and the SWAT team was dispatched and a warrant for his arrest was obtained.

Documents state that Nicholas allowed his girlfriend to leave but wouldn’t leave the room as he continued to speak to negotiators on the phone and threatened to kill officers, local car dealers, and other individuals.
