Emi’s Color Shoot gives childhood back to more than 1,500 Panhandle kids

An Amarillo youth, Emi Schooler had first-hand experience with Scottish Rite For Children in 2013, when she was diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), an inflammatory disease of the muscles, skin and blood vessels that affects about three in 1 million children each year.

She was first diagnosed by Dr. Shari Medford, an Amarillo pediatrician, who sent her with her family to Dallas to see Dr. Lorien Nassi, a Dallas rheumatologist. Emi, daughter of Tom and Rebekah Schooler, was then admitted to Scottish Rite for Children for further testing, where she underwent surgery, more blood work, an MRI and many other tests for a definitive diagnosis and to establish a baseline to monitor her in the future.

The family immediately felt at home at the Scottish Rite for Children. They were never once alone or left wondering what to expect. Emi responded very quickly to the treatment and was able to start decreasing her medications within the first month. She now has appointments every three months in Dallas to monitor her progress…
