AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – According to Texas Department of Transportation officials, motor vehicles are a leading cause of death among children. Although many people may believe their children are properly buckled up, officials said 46% of all car seats are misused.
“There’s the reason why they have so many new safety features; they keep making them safer and safer for the traveling public,” Jason Britsch, TxDOT Amarillo public information officer, said.

Texas law requires all children under eight, unless taller than four feet nine inches, to be in a car seat whenever they ride in a motor vehicle. Children under the age of 13 should ride in the backseat, properly secured in a seat belt or booster chair. Failure to properly restrain a child can result in a ticket of up to $250.
“Make sure the body weight is correct, and for the kids’ size,” Bristch said, “If it’s facing rear, if it’s facing front. There’s a lot that goes into it.”…
