Xcel Energy employees volunteer during annual ‘Day of Service’ in Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Xcel Energy announced more than 115 employees will participate in the company’s annual Day of Service on Friday, contributing more than 700 hours of volunteer work to support local nonprofits.

According to the company, the seven projects located in Amarillo are part of Xcel Energy’s larger Day of Service initiative happening across its eight-state service areas. Local projects that will be helped by 62 volunteers Friday include:

  • The Amarillo Habitat for Humanity, helping at two build sites with painting, drywall, tile installation and other tasks;
  • The Salvation Army of Amarillo, where volunteers will paint the dining hall;
  • No Boundaries International Amarillo, painting doors and installing shelves;
  • Amarillo Children’s Home, installing outdoor lighting on the sports court;
  • Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, cleaning trailways of debris; and
  • The Don Harrington Discovery Center, painting one of the center’s large exhibit walls.

Officials with Xcel Energy noted the company began its Day of Service in 2010, “to honor the victims, survivors and first responders of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. The initiative has since grown to celebrate all those who work to keep the country safe.”

Employees for Xcel Energy receive paid volunteer time off days each year and can apply for Xcel Energy Foundation funding to match their volunteer hours and personal donations.
