Northwest Texas Healthcare System Behavioral Health hosts event for Suicide Awareness Month

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Northwest Texas Healthcare System Behavioral Health will host a special event for Suicide Awareness Month on Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to NWTHS officials, the event will provide information and connections for the community.

Veterans are reported to have the highest suicide rate

“Northwest Behavioral Health wanted to host a special event to bring local awareness to mental health struggles in our area. Unfortunately, our region continues to experience an increase in the number of individuals who need support and care. Social isolation, mental illness and difficult life transitions can play a role in the increased risk for suicide, but we also know that connectedness and a sense of belonging can protect against suicide,” said Chris Veal, CEO for NWTHS Behavioral Health.

Officials stated that risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. The factors that community members should be aware of are:

  • Mental disorders – particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders
  • Alcohol and other substance use disorders
  • Hopelessness
  • History of trauma or abuse
  • Previous suicide attempts
  • Family history of suicide
  • Job or financial loss
