Man sentenced to 7 years for officer assault, evading arrest after June police chase

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – One man was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting a public servant, evading arrest and unauthorized use of a vehicle, following a June police chase and crash in Amarillo.

According to court documents, 27-year-old Aaron Walling was sentenced to seven years for assault of a public servant, five years for evading arrest with a vehicle, and 14 months for unauthorized use of a vehicle. Those sentences are expected to be carried out concurrently.

Walling was indicted on those charges in August, after a June 15 incident involving the Amarillo Police Department. As noted in previous reports, police were investigating a report of an allegedly stolen car, which was being driven by Walling, in the area of 34th and Western Street. Walling drove the car away and into a parking garage when police attempted to pull him over, according to officers, and “attempted to run over one officer who tried to stop him.”

After the car crashed and caught fire in the 1500 block of South Kentucky, officers reported Walling ran into a nearby home, and was then arrested after trying to escape through an upstairs window…
