Fourth graders squealed as Molly, a jersey cow, was hooked to a milking machine and milk started to flow through the clear tubes to the milk receptacle. It was one of the highpoints of Canyon Independent School District’s 14th annual Fourth Grade Agricultural Science Fair.
“Most of today’s youth are many generations removed from being involved in agriculture,” said Shannon Walsh, Urban Program Coordinator for the Randall County Extension Agency. “Going back two or three generations, most farms were small family farms. Now we are moving towards mostly large commercial farms, so the kids don’t have the opportunity to be involved in agriculture. This event gives them the opportunity to be involved in agriculture.”
