After more than a year of limited on-site activity, the Producer Owned Beef plant site in Amarillo is once again bustling with construction. Crews are advancing work on a $670 million facility that company officials say is designed to revolutionize the Texas Panhandle’s cattle industry by giving ranchers control through a producer-owned processing model.
Civil design work — including grading, drainage, paving and building pad preparation — is now complete, with overall civil construction about 65% finished, according to company representatives. Basement excavation wrapped up this summer, and since Aug. 11, crews have been pouring concrete and erecting precast panels and poured-in-place walls, reaching about 30% of vertical construction. That phase is expected to conclude by the end of the year, with walls, utilities and roofing projected to follow in 2026.
The project had appeared stalled for more than 12 months, sparking local skepticism. Officials said the slowdown reflected the scope of the build as well as financing and permitting challenges.
